Who we are
We are a small group of AI safety advocates in the D.C. area formed by former PauseAI US volunteers. Our common purpose is halting frontier AI development to prevent the creation of superintelligent AI, or systems broadly smarter than humans. We believe that superintelligent AI would carry an extreme risk of global catastrophe or human extinction.
What we do
We aim to be a local hub for AI safety activism in the D.C. area. As a small organization, we work with nationwide AI safety groups on advocacy in our area. We also aim to maintain a calendar (shown below) of AI safety related events in the area.
We have public video calls every monday to discuss strategy, which can be joined through our Discord server.
Why AI is dangerous
- AI is “grown” through an automated process, so no one knows how AI systems work or exactly how they will behave.
- AI companies are racing to create superintelligent AI, systems that would be smarter and more capable than people.
- Frontier AI systems have already been seen escaping human control: Developing secret ways to communicate, hacking into websites and attempting to cover their tracks.
- On average, AI researchers believe there is a 1 in 6 chance of HUMAN EXTINCTION in the near future from superintelligent AI.
What we can do about it
- We need a Global AI Treaty to stop frontier AI development, ensuring that smarter-than-human AI isn't built anywhere on Earth.
- We can enforce this treaty by tracking specialized AI chips, detecting giant AI training runs, and establishing mandatory reporting standards. We've made treaties before: to limit nuclear weapons, fix the ozone layer, and more. We can repeat these successes with AI.
We need your help
We are a small group and we are always welcoming of new faces. You can get involved by joining our Discord server where you can chat with us and attend our weekly video calls.
Our calendar shows events from multiple organizations that we are involved with.
